How to Optimize Reach on Facebook with Joey Myers of Lead Generation SEO Services: ePresence Podcast Interview with Mark Galvin

 

 

This re-posted interview, featuring yours truly on the ePresence.me podcast, looks at how to generate organic leads on Facebook for free and using paid ads.  We discuss lead generation techniques that work in 2022, and how things have changed for better or worse over the passed 5 years with Facebook advertising, and what you can do to work smarter.

We recently had a chance to connect with Joey Myers of Lead Generation SEO Services. Joey is an expert on digital marketing and ad design. With an entrepreneurial heart, Joey began his journey with a website that focused on baseball. Through some twists and turns, he has made his way back to baseball, SEO, and social media. He joined us for a conversation about the decreased potential of organic reach on Facebook and shared some key information to help everyone navigate the space a bit better. 
 
It is commonly discussed how Facebook organic reach is dead. Joey shared that he used to see fantastic follower growth on his company Facebook page around 2015. In one year he would see Facebook grow by 16,000 followers. And all of that was organic. Of course he had great content and he was engaging with an audience that wanted to see what he shared! But today that organic reach will not yield that number of followers. He also used to see 4,000 likes on organic posts. In 2017 and 18 that organic posts on Facebook started to wane. He found that he was seeing fewer followers and the engagement with posts were dropping by a factor of five. 
 
We have plenty of proof of this, and people love to talk about the fact that organic reach is difficult to achieve on Facebook. But, not many people get granular about what that might mean for business and social media tactics! 
 
Facebook is a ‘pay to play’ platform. Many businesses experience engagement from only .5% of their followers. .5%! This is not because their content is boring or does not cater to their audience, but because Facebook does not even show the content to the audience in the first place. If companies want people to see the content they have worked so hard to create, they will need to pay Facebook to serve it up. 
 

So, Facebook ads. What does this look like? How does a business budget for these? 

 
An approach many people will take is to create a Facebook ad that directs the viewer to the company website where a pixel (a piece of code) has been installed. This code will drop a cookie on the user’s computer. Though, it is important to note that the duration of data collection has been severely reduced as a consequence of Facebook/Apple privacy arguments. 
 
Once the pixel tracks about 100 users, you can create a lookalike audience. Facebook will evaluate those 100 users, dive into its own database, and source millions of people who look just like those who have already expressed interest in the ads. Then, they will show this new group your ads. Joey was able to secure email addresses for about 25¢ each (Cost Per Click) thanks to the lookalike audience function! 
 
His next step is to optimize your ads. You can set up four or five different ads that will run for approximately three weeks, and Facebook will return data to show which images, headlines, etc. Are most appealing to your audience. Unfortunately, Joey explained that, in most cases, a company must spend roughly $3,000 on this testing period in order to gather enough data to proceed confidently with optimized ads. This used to be a much more affordable process. 
 
As Facebook continues to alter their algorithms and expectations, we will need to stay up to date on what does and doesn’t work.
